What is a Scarecrow motion sensor water sprinkler?

The Contech Scarecrow sprinkler works as a motion activated animal deterrent. It stands ready to activate as soon as anything gets in range of its motion detector. When triggered, the sprinker will send a 4 second pulse of water in a 180 degree arc. The combination of the sudden motion, sound, and get of water will scare just about any animal away.

How does it work?

It is fairly simple to operate. Once you attach a hose, you simply stake the Scarecrow in the area that you want to protect. The motion detector itself is fairly sensitive. It will trigger on anything from a mid-sized bird on up. is really just a sprinkler with a motion sensor. If the motion sensor is triggered, the scarecrow water sprinkler will unleash a 4-second jet of water in a 180 degree arc. The combination of the sudden noise, motion, and get of water will scare just about any animal away.

Uses:

Cats - Keep cats from using your flower pots and garden as a liter box. Keep them from prowling around your yard at night.

Deer - Keep deer out of your garden and from destroying your flowers and vegetables.

Dogs - Got a neighborhood dog that likes to dig holes in your yard or leave little presents? This will make them think twice.

Birds - Scare away birds, keep them from hunting in your fish pond, and keep their droppings from ending up in your pool.

Squirrels, racoons, and other nocturnal visitors - The scarecrow will safely and humanely protect your yard.

Pros:

It is more effective than ultrasonic devices. Most animals learn to ignore the sound after a while.

It is much more safe and humane than setting out traps our poison.

The Scarecrow motion sensor water sprinkler does what it claims to do. With a combination of sudden sound, motion, and jets of water, it will effectively drive away most animals.

Cons:

The Scarecrow is motion activated. That means it doesn't know how to distinguish between you and a cat. So be careful where you first set it up. You might forget some morning and accidentally set it off. It takes awhile to remember to turn off the water before you approach it. You might not think it is funny when you get blasted, but your family sure will.

More seriously, one thing you should know is that the Scarecrow is entirely plastic. In most cases this is not a problem but if you soil is hard packed and pull of rocks, you'll want to be careful not to damage it as you set it up.

The motion detector on the Scarecrow is battery powered. You should expect to have to replace the battery several times during a season.

Another thing to be aware of is that you have to dedicate a hose to the Scarecrow. Many people only just it at night as this is when the most problematic animals invade your yard, so this is not a problem. But if you expect it to guard your yard around the clock, then you'll need to dedicate a hose and faucet.

Some people report that it does not work very well with raccoons. The Scarecrow will detect the raccoons and spray them with water, but the raccoons just ignore it.

All in all though, the Scarecrow works incredibly well. It is a safe and humane deterrent. You can rest easy knowing that your yard is safe from unwanted nighttime pests. My wife and I get a special thrill when we hear it going off in the middle of the night. We know our vegetables are safe for another day.
